When we think of classical music, we usually think of violins, cellos, and pianos. However, in the contemporary classical scene, percussion is the true driver of innovation. At the Bonk Festival, percussion instruments were the center of attention, providing the rhythmic engine and sonic variety that kept the programming fresh.

Percussionists are not limited by traditional tuning systems. They can play anything that makes a sound, from standard marimbas and timpani to brake drums, brake discs, wooden boxes, and sheets of metal. This variety allows for a huge range of colors and textures that other instruments cannot replicate. The physical nature of percussion also makes it exciting to watch; the movements of the players are part of the visual performance.

The focus on percussion at Bonk showed that the future of chamber music lies in rhythm and texture. By elevating these instruments to the center of the stage, the festival helped redefine the sound of modern classical music.
